Reuse of existing buildings for new uses presents unique challenges. Fire protection, exiting, and other life-safety issues must be resolved while ensuring that the new facility functions in its new life. Frequently, new systems must be integrated into a building core and shell that was never designed to accommodate them, in a way that is unobtrusive. And, more often than not, the condition of the existing building requires the specialized knowledge and skill of a preservation architect.
